      NATIONAL ORIENTEERING MEDALS ONCE AGAIN!

Many congratulations to St. Andrew’s orienteering team who won awards at the British Score Course Championships once again, maintaining their record of excellent results at national competitions.  Over the past few years our teams have brought home medals on eight occasions.  Arrow Valley Park in the West Midlands was this year’s venue and it proved to be a very challenging location.

Both boys and girls teams were placed third in the Primary Schools category.  Thomas Martin produced a brilliant run to gain the individual silver medal in the Year 5 boys’ event.  Zac Poter was not far behind in 4th spot.  In her first national competition Amy Skeet had a great run and located 12 checkpoints, finishing just outside the individual medals also in 4th spot.

In the boys’ team event the bronze medal winners were Thomas Martin, Zac Poter, Harrison Dixey and Oliver Prince who accumulated 490 points, just 10 points short of the winning score.  The girls missed injured Lucy Walker and, with only 3 runners instead of 4, team-mates Amy Skeet, Hannah Wallace and Evie Amos ran incredibly well to collect the team bronze medals.

Well done also to Thomas Leader, William Press, Ben Partridge, Oliver Pringle, Max Davies, Joel Hull and Liam Polley who showed great team spirit and tackled the course with energy and determination.  Thank you very much

  • Orienteering Season

    Wed 22 Oct 2014
ORIENTEERING SEASON OFF TO A FLYING START

The commitment and dedication of St. Andrew’s orienteers is second to none.  Fresh from their success at the national championships on Saturday the team turned out in force at Broaks on Sunday.  Thank you to Evie Amos, Harrison Dixey, Joel Hull, Thomas Leader, Ben Partridge, Liam Polley, Zac Poter, Oliver Prince, Amy Skeet and their parents for their enthusiasm and unstinting support.

There were some superb runs by both experienced and novice competitors.

Navigating on his own for the first time Seb Poter claimed maximum points in the boys’ younger age class.  Not to be out done, Daisy Harrington also scored 100 points in the girls’ section.  It was fantastic to see so many of our novice orienteers map-reading and navigating independently.  Louis Dove, Jamie Hartnup and Luca Tufnell all tried solo runs while Charlotte Caswell and Izzy Peters, Ryan Skeet and Thomas Walker formed two great partnerships.

With the fastest time of the day Harrison Dixey looked very impressive.  He ran 1.5km and found 13 controls in 8.41.  Ben Styman-Heighton and Evie Amos also displayed excellent levels of fitness and navigation skills.  Rosy Bird looks set to challenge for the league title again this season.  Two of our youngest orienteers, Ben Partridge and Oliver Prince, clocked fast times on the yellow course, proving that they are equal to the challenge.

Well done to all of you.

  • Olympic Park Visit - Wow!!!

    Mon 20 Oct 2014
Following the success of the Year 3 cross country team earlier this year, the boys were invited to take part in the inaugural Hockey and Tennis schools festival at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.  It was a great privilege to be among the 400 pupils from London, Essex and Hertfordshire who were selected to attend the festival.

Despite the Monday morning traffic in London, the boys were so excited and  as soon as they arrived, they went straight into action!  They received specialist tennis coaching in a vast sports hall large enough to house four courts! Jack and Ben became hotshots at hitting the ball into the target square.  The highlight of the tennis session was a game of ‘Budge’ in which Seb and Jamie quickly worked their way up to become ‘Kings of the Court’.

After lunch we headed outside onto the amazing blue astro pitches.  Despite the driving rain the hockey coaching was great fun and included shooting practice followed by an 8-a-side match.  Joe and Finley were always in the middle of the action, winning the ball back for St. Andrew’s, while Jacob found space on the wing and Oliver kept a cool head in defence.  The boys soon put their goal scoring skills into practice and won the match 6:1.

The day finished with a guided tour of the Olympic Park and a look inside Lee Valley VeloPark, an iconic London 2012 venue.  We all thought that the velodrome looked like a giant pringle!

It was fantastic to have the opportunity to play hockey and tennis on the only purpose built London 2012 Paralympic venue.

The day got off to a bad start for the drivers who had to negotiate Monday morning traffic and rain.  The boys were so excited they hardly noticed.  We finally made it to the centre and the team went straight into action.  They received specialist tennis coaching in a vast sports hall large enough to house four courts.  Jack and Ben became hotshots at hitting the ball into the target square.  The highlight of the tennis session was a game of ‘Budge’ in which Seb and Jamie quickly worked their way up to become ‘kings of the court’.
