Olympic Park Visit - Wow!!!

Following the success of the Year 3 cross country team earlier this year, the boys were invited to take part in the inaugural Hockey and Tennis schools festival at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.  It was a great privilege to be among the 400 pupils from London, Essex and Hertfordshire who were selected to attend the festival.

Despite the Monday morning traffic in London, the boys were so excited and  as soon as they arrived, they went straight into action!  They received specialist tennis coaching in a vast sports hall large enough to house four courts! Jack and Ben became hotshots at hitting the ball into the target square.  The highlight of the tennis session was a game of ‘Budge’ in which Seb and Jamie quickly worked their way up to become ‘Kings of the Court’.

After lunch we headed outside onto the amazing blue astro pitches.  Despite the driving rain the hockey coaching was great fun and included shooting practice followed by an 8-a-side match.  Joe and Finley were always in the middle of the action, winning the ball back for St. Andrew’s, while Jacob found space on the wing and Oliver kept a cool head in defence.  The boys soon put their goal scoring skills into practice and won the match 6:1.

The day finished with a guided tour of the Olympic Park and a look inside Lee Valley VeloPark, an iconic London 2012 venue.  We all thought that the velodrome looked like a giant pringle!

It was fantastic to have the opportunity to play hockey and tennis on the only purpose built London 2012 Paralympic venue.

The day got off to a bad start for the drivers who had to negotiate Monday morning traffic and rain.  The boys were so excited they hardly noticed.  We finally made it to the centre and the team went straight into action.  They received specialist tennis coaching in a vast sports hall large enough to house four courts.  Jack and Ben became hotshots at hitting the ball into the target square.  The highlight of the tennis session was a game of ‘Budge’ in which Seb and Jamie quickly worked their way up to become ‘kings of the court’.
