Chobham Orienteering Report

St Andrews Scores huge success!

On Saturday 10th October a team of 6 boys and 4 girls made their way to Chobham Common in Surrey for the British Schools Score Course Championships.

Louis Dove, Thomas Leader, Oliver Prince, Harrison Dixey, Ben Partridge and Thomas Martin formed the boys team with Sophie Blower, Katie May Blower, Katie Higgins and Amy Skeet representing the girls.

On what looked like a tricky area for running, with its large areas of marsh and endless contours, each competitor had to plan their own route and collect as many controls as they could in 45 minutes without being late back. Finishing after 45 minutes would incur -5 points for each minute, therefore reducing their overall score.

Everyone of our runners showed excellent navigational and decision making skills and confidence to make the school proud, and wonderfully each one came back with a big smile on their face!

Fabulous scoring meant that at the prizegiving St Andrews won both the girls and boys primary school team events! Huge bags of chocolate were given with the medals resulting in huge smiles.

Individually the boys did fantastically: Oliver Prince came 2nd in the year 5 competition and Thomas Martin was crowned British Champion in the year 6 category. It was wonderful to see Thomas fulfil his potential at a National event after knocking at the door with two 4ths and a 2nd in his three other competitions.

Huge thanks must go to all the parents for their continued support to the school, Guildford Orienteers who hosted the event and Julie Laver of Essex Stragglers who supported all concerned.
